The Genius of Yoga Therapy
with Dr. Hermann Traitteur
This workshop will focus on how to work skillfully and intelligently with common conditions through practice and understanding the effects of poses on the musculoskeletal system and organs along with physiological regulation.
Dr. Traitteur will offer us practice experience, with poses and sequences for both healing (regenerating/recovery) and activating (stimulating/revitilizing) various areas, organs and systems of the body.
We will have the opportunity to both see how to set up these therapeutic postures, what to look for in the poses and how to adjust for maximum efficacy. With Dr. Traitteur’s guidance, we will then practice to feel and experience the poses and their effects.

About Dr. Hermann Traitteur
Dr. Hermann Traitteur grew up in the southern German town of Munich, where in the late 1980s, he first came into contact with Iyengar Yoga. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he moved to Berlin in 1990, where he studied medicine and began his medical career at an orthopedic clinic. When he was studying medicine in Berlin, he also participated in a Teacher Training Program at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. Following his certification with the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS), he furthered his education through annual stays at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India.
In 1994, Hermann Traitteur and Claudia Böhm established Yoga Mitte — the first Iyengar Yoga studio in the former eastern part of Berlin. In the early 2000s, Hermann and Claudia were joined by Annette Herrenleben, who had been studying and assisting under the guidance of the Iyengar family at RIMYI in Pune for more than a decade. With B.K.S. Iyengar’s blessings, Yoga Mitte was renamed the Iyengar Yoga Institute of Berlin.
In addition to teaching regular yoga classes, Hermann Traitteur opened a yoga therapy practice in the same location. Since the end of the 1990s, Hermann has been a lecturer and assessor for Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training Programs throughout Germany. His dissertation, published in 2012, is a study of the effects of Iyengar Yoga on chronic neck pain.
Dr. traitteur’s new book: Yoga Asana physiology
available late july
A comprehensive and richly illustrated guide to the physiological effects of asanas. Written for yoga practitioners, yoga students, yoga teachers and aspiring teachers, as well as those working with yoga therapy, the book explains how asanas influence the body’s organs and physiological systems, combining medical knowledge with the teachings of Iyengar Yoga.
Yoga Asana Physiology is a unique guide that bridges the worlds of physiology and yoga in a clear, practical, and accessible way. The book explores the physiological effects of asanas on the body's major organ systems, including the respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, reproductive, immune, endocrine, and nervous systems. Each chapter examines the anatomy and function of the relevant organs, their regulation and control, and the influence of the musculoskeletal system upon them. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding how individual asanas and sequences affect physiological processes throughout the body.
More than one thousand specially created illustrations help make complex concepts easy to understand and directly applicable to practice. The book distinguishes between classical asanas and supported asanas using props, demonstrating how different approaches can influence physiological responses.
Written in an accessible style, the book is suitable for readers without a medical background as well as experienced yoga teachers and healthcare professionals. Its particular value lies in its integration of modern physiology with the teachings of Iyengar Yoga, offering a systematic exploration of how yoga supports the health and functioning of the body's organs and systems. The final chapter broadens this perspective by presenting physiology through the lens of Āyurveda.
The book Yoga Asana Physiology consists of ten chapters. What makes this book special is its easy-to-read text and specially created illustrations.
The first chapter deals with the effects of asanas on our organs. It introduces a series of asanas that are used as examples in later chapters and cites BKS Iyengar and Geeta S. Iyengar regarding the physiological effects. A distinction is made between classic asanas and asanas supported by props.
The second to ninth chapters explain eight different body systems (respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, reproductive, immune, endocrine, and nervous). Each of these chapters highlights the various organs, the effect of the musculoskeletal system on the organs, and how the organs are controlled and regulated. The central question here is the effect of different asanas.
The last chapter deals with Ayurveda and yoga.

Dr. traitteur’s first book: Yoga Asana Anatomy
In the late 1990s, Hermann Traitteur began to teach anatomy and physiology through the nascent German Iyengar YogaTeacher Training Program. He developed handouts for the courses as he found the majority of anatomy textbooks were too complicated for the purposes of Iyengar Yoga and too difficult to understand for those without a background in medicine. From these emerged the book „Yoga Asana Anatomie“ first published in 2016, in German. Three years later came the English translation, which has gained greater depth and scope due to useful contributions made by Lois Steinberg and others. Yoga Asana Anatomy aspires to be readable and accessible to those without extensive medical knowledge. It is also intended to be a fascinating and informative guidebook for those with medical expertise. The text is constructed so that each theme’s anatomical explanations are coupled with corresponding color pictures. References are made to asana and to pathology, or, different health problems that can arise in the musculoskeletal system. Tips are provided about asanas that can be practiced as preventative measures. The explanations continually return to those found in the standard works of Iyengar Yoga. The book begins with a presentation of different concepts of the human, from the natural sciences to yoga philosophy.
